I’ve got a serious artistic crush and I can’t stop admiring her…

It’s Friday and I’m in Love with the beautiful work of Caroline South, who writes the cool and elegant blog ‘Scraps of Us‘.

Caroline is a talented photographer, stylist, designer, artist and Mum of 2 equally beautiful children, Archie and Elizabeth.

What is charming about Caroline is I don’t actually think she realises how talented she is! I was lucky enough to meet her at an Instagram meetup in Brighton a few weeks ago and was amazed to hear that she has no formal training as a graphic designer. Yet when you look at her compositions, they are meticulously styled and balanced. Caroline has a ceramics degree and studied art and design at college so is clearly very creative but her compositions are just perfection.

Her family life is integral to her creative compositions and Caroline spends a lot of time with her family, walking along the local beaches looking for treasures. I asked her about the inspiration for her images:

“I love photographing all the bits and bobs we find. I have a ‘collected treasures‘ series on my blog which I started to remember and document all the special things we’ve found at the beach, park or just in the garden. The special gifts from kids brought home in buckets and pockets or the moon rock and dinosaur fossils found by Archie. I love that they remind me of days out and adventures had.

My inspiration comes from all around me, from nature itself and the shapes and colours of objects and how these compliment each other.Caroline South, Scraps Of Us
My inspiration comes from all around me, from nature itself and the shapes and colours of objects and how these compliment each other. The changing seasons and variety of flowers and wildlife, and also the various of treasures that can be found at different beaches give me inspiration that is constantly evolving.

I also have ongoing collections of different objects which we can add to – little bowls of treasures waiting to be photographed. It amazes me how the nearby beaches vary so much for finding different objects. Some have lots of plastic flotsam and others might have lots of sea glass or driftwood.”

Once Caroline knows what she wants a picture to look like, they come together quickly. Her randomly styled objects take much longer to photograph:

“I end up faffing for ages.” she says “I’m much happier creating neat things!”

Caroline don’t sell these images as prints at the moment, but it’s definitely something she wants to do soon. She is hoping to expand the her current Etsy shop (where she has a lovely selection of wall decals) to sell more products. As well as the prints, she is working on some screen printed cushions at the moment and more wall sticker designs. I personally can’t wait to see her offering her imagery as prints and other products. I think she is going to do really well.
