This week I’ve been inspired by Flamingos. What on earth has this got to do with Yoga I hear you ask? Bear with me
A few weeks ago I posted about how, as a creative mum, I have to carve out time for myself, in order to remain creative and inspired. This includes practising yoga.
One of my favourite poses is Tree Pose. What has this got to do with flamingos? Yep you’ve got it. Tree pose (Vrksasana) involves standing on one leg.
The Physical Benefits of Tree Pose in Yoga
- Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles, and spine
- Stretches the groins and inner thighs, chest and shoulders
- Improves sense of balance
- Relieves sciatica and reduces flat feet
The Mental & Spiritual Benefits of Tree Pose in Yoga
- Calms and relaxes your mind and central nervous system
- Develops balance and focus, physically and mentally
- Increases your mind / body awareness.
Practicing balancing poses in yoga, such as Tree Pose, helps you gain both physical and mental steadiness and poise. Regular practice will improve your focus and your ability to concentrate in all areas of your life.
Ok so the reality is when I first started practising this pose I looked more like a bird flying out of the tree – flapping my arms wildly as I tried to regain balance.
However with time, I’ve come to stand steady, poised and ready to face whatever trials and tribulations may come that day. I like to imagine roots growing from the bottom of my feet, planting myself firmly in the ground, strong and steady. Swaying with the wind. Creatively, it can help me face rejection, criticism, or just a bad day and keep my feet firmly on the ground.
Go on give it a go. I am by no means a yoga expert. Find a qualified practitioner to learn more about the benefits of yoga and to get the most out of it.
Do you practice yoga? What’s your favourite yoga pose? Do you think it can help you mentally and creatively?
