In case you are new to this blog, Friday’s are the day I celebrate another creative who inspires me. I’ve loved a man who stuffs insects for a living, pin-up girls with big hair and shadow dancers made from tea. This week I made a wonderful discovery – Monsieur Plant, aka Christophe Guinet.
Christophe Guinet was born in Paris. He moved between town and country, always keeping in touch with nature. Whilst Christophe was a teenager, he developed a passion for plants, especially the cultivation of orchids: attracted by their exacting needs and rewarded by the beauty and delicacy of their flowers. Later on, his tastes evolved to urban cultures: skating, art, especially street art and fashion. A man after my own heart.
His craft allowed him to realise what kind of world we are living in : worried by industrialisation, manipulation and how human thought was changing, he becomes more careful when collecting raw natural materials.
Contemplative and passionate aesthete of the plant world, he uses his findings related to places and seasons, to create works of art with care and a concentration close to the meditative state.
I really love how Christophe has brought together his appreciation of nature’s own beauty together with urban culture. Through his compositions, Christophe shows us the beauty of nature through everyday objects.
This is particularly evident in the series “Just Grow It!”.Taking Nike, mid top trainers and turning them into living sculptures, adorning them with flowers, moss, bark and soil, matched to each shoe. In this project he is taking a cult, heavily mass marketed and mass produced product, then transforming it into something more poetic, simply through the use of natural elements. Fabulous.
Christophe cites Archimbolo’s carefully composed floral and vegetable collages when talking about his ‘Just Grow It’ series. Remember these?!
Have a great day and weekend everybody.
